our ghosts.

our ghosts accompany

loneliness…

mirrors of distant memory

     find to the dusk

like at sea

     a memento

in a dream

     that eludes me

and floats…

     Orange blossoms

into Ophelia’s violets

and the granitic rocks

     rush to the red dust

for how quietly time has passed

 through the statuary of rock

     and forked poppies

with leaves

of loss

it’s only a shadow in your hand…

the ghost of remaining eyes

     along the dark

it has e v o l v e d

     missing the strange sea

burning in barrels of oil

     shaded yet calloused

like Father’s wrists

reeled to train and train

the surf lures the mulberries

     the skin breaks

and returns to the everness of fingernails

and pitons,

it’s a shadow to the sea

     and to lose it is

where the ocean lures

the spine of root and stone

to the allurement of the dark

blood-warm under the stars

     of inhabiting and war

shielding memory and dream.

This is a beautifully sad poem, Lucy. Ghosts can not connect. They pass by, perhaps wishing that they could do so, but must remain trapped in their isolation. Well, that is just my thought, but everyone, including the composer of the poem interprets a given poem in his or her own particular way. Best, Kevin

Beautiful analysis, Kevin. I thank you dearly for your feedback.

A reoccurring theme in my poetry is time passing by, memories, and metamorphosis (whether good or bad based on personal reflection). You’ve interpreted the poem similarly to what I had in mind when writing it.

Interpretations are introspective since it shows how a piece connected with the reader. I think the reader’s interpretation is most important since it’s how they construct the meaning and what they take from it as well.

Thank you again for the lovely words and analysis. It’s always appreciated.
